Orlando, FL – February 24, 2025 | By: Tomas Lares

For over 34 years, Tomas Lares, Founder of United Abolitionists, has been on a relentless mission to combat human trafficking, exploitation, and abuse. In his own words, this journey of advocacy chose him, and he has dedicated his life to protecting the vulnerable and empowering communities to take action.

“I honestly have to say I didn’t really choose this path. It chose me, and I wouldn’t change a thing.”Tomas Lares

From Calling to Commitment

Tomas Lares, founder of United Abolitionists, has dedicated over three decades to fighting human trafficking. His journey began in 1990 with Big Brothers Big Sisters in Polk County, Florida, where he worked with abused and exploited children. In 2004, inspired by insights from former U.S. Senator Sam Brownback, Lares deepened his commitment to combating human trafficking, leading to the facilitation of one of Central Florida’s first human trafficking seminars in 2005.

Building Coalitions and Leading Initiatives

Lares co-founded the Space Coast Rescue and Restore Coalition (now the Space Coast Human Trafficking Task Force) and the Orlando Rescue and Restore Coalition, partnering with the Metropolitan Bureau of Investigation. In 2009, he established Florida Abolitionist, Inc., now known as United Abolitionists, and was instrumental in creating a 24-hour Human Trafficking Hotline in Central Florida.

Recognitions and Impact

Lares’s efforts have been recognized through various awards, including the Orange County Bar Association’s ‘Liberty Bell’ Award and the ‘Community Advocate of the Year’ by Florida Attorney General Ashley Moody. He has also contributed to the development of anti-human trafficking curriculum in partnership with the University of Central Florida.

Continuing the Mission

Currently, Lares serves as the Co-chairman of the Lake-Sumter Human Trafficking Task Force and is a founding member of the University of Central Florida’s Center for the Study of Human Trafficking and Modern Slavery. His ongoing work includes legislative advocacy and community outreach to eradicate modern-day slavery.

A Calling to Serve

Over the years, Tomas has provided direct support to survivors, worked alongside law enforcement and organizations to combat human trafficking, and raised awareness through community initiatives and national advocacy. His efforts through United Abolitionists continue to make a lasting impact, ensuring that victims receive the care and resources they need while empowering communities to take action against modern-day slavery.
