As January marks National Human Trafficking Prevention Month, we at United Abolitionists are intensifying our efforts to illuminate the dark corners where human trafficking thrives. Our founder, Tomas Lares, recently spoke with WESH about the critical role education plays in recognizing and preventing this pervasive crime, especially in Central Florida, where trafficking remains a prevalent issue.
Florida’s booming industries and extensive ports make it a hotspot for human trafficking, ranking it as the third worst in the U.S. for such incidents. “These bad actors come here…to exploit or take advantage of the vulnerable,” Lares explained, highlighting the urgent need for vigilance and education within our communities.
To this end, United Abolitionists is collaborating with Valencia College and UCF to host the 16th Annual Human Trafficking Awareness Days Conference on January 23, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Valencia College. This event, crucial for both professionals and community members, aims to educate and equip us all with the tools necessary to combat human trafficking.
We extend an invitation to each of you to join us at this conference, which will also be accessible virtually. Your presence represents not just support but an active step toward change and protection for potential victims.
For a deeper dive into the insights shared by Tomas Lares and the stories of survivors like Cindy Alvarado, we encourage you to read the full article on WESH’s website or watch the YouTube video below. Their stories and the information provided could be the key to saving a life from the clutches of exploitation.
